The Centre-appointed tribunal that examined the ninth renewal of the prohibition on the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act maintained the ban on SIMI.
Hanif Sheikh had been absconding for more than 22 years in a case of sedition and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act registered against him at the New Friends Colony Police Station in 2001.
The Centre pointed out that every new recruit of SIMI is administered an oath which asserts that they would operate for 'establishment of Islamic system'. The affidavit was submitted in response to a petition contesting the 2019 notification that extended the outfit's ban under the UAPA.
