The Citizenship Bill has united parties which have traditionally been arch enemies. The CPI(M) has been supported in its opposition to the Bill by Mamata Banerjee's TMC
An 11-hour bandh was called by AASU and the North East Students' Organisation (NESO) and was supported by over a hundred organisations in the state against the bill.
The Bill proposes to allow the religious minorities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to acquire the Indian citizenship by way of naturalisation.
