Kolkata junior doctors began fast unto death, protesting the rape and murder of a colleague in RG Kar Hospital, demanding justice, and accusing the West Bengal Government of neglecting their demands.
The family members of the girl were harassed when they went to file a complaint at the Mahishamari police station. The ill-treatment triggered the locals, who then hit the streets in protest.
"Buoyed by the activities of the radicalists in Bangladesh who are trying to repress the festivities surrounding the Durga Puja, miscreants in West Bengal are trying to imitate the same, in order to fan communal tensions and create an environment of intimidation and fear during the festive season," Suvendu Adhikari said in his tweet.
The alleged rape of a civil servant's wife in the state's capital in July this year serves as yet another glaring example of the systemic failures and political patronage that pervades West Bengal's governance.
